Kamin Lertchaiprasert: Sitting

1 April - 1 May 2005

Art-U room is pleased to present the solo exhibition of Kamin Lertchaiprasert, a leading figure of Thai contemporary art scene.

Based in Chiang Mai, a northern city of Thailand, Kamin Lertchaiprasert has developed an activity that aims to harmonize the daily life and the art by putting emphasis on the process of art making and frequently referring to the Buddhism philosophy. His work often takes a form of the project throughout a year or years, ‘Sitting’, the work on view at this exhibition, also consists of woodcuts and wood sculptures which have been modeled after a series of 365 drawing executed one piece per day from the New Year’s Day of 2004. On these somehow humorous figures in meditating position will be seen the reflections of the artist’s everyday experience or state of mind, also the messages that he obtained through his daily meditation.

Parallel to his individual creation, Kamin also engages himself in a wide range of activities such as the Land, a project of experimental artists commune in the middle of the rice field in a suburb of Chiang Mai, operated together with Rirkrit Tiravanija and others artists and local residents.

Thai contemporary art scene is getting animated in these years and gaining the attention of worldwide audience. We cordially invite you to experience the work of Kamin Lertchaiprasert and share the idea about art and life at this his 2nd solo exhibition in Japan.
