Wah Nu:  Self-Identity

   Art-U room is pleased to host the solo exhibition of Wah Nu, an emerging artist whose work represents the new trend in Myanmar contemporary art.


   Wah Nu, born in Yangon in 1977, launched herself on an artistic career after graduating from University of Culture in Yangon in 1998 where she majored in music. Since then she has developed a personal expression by mainly adopting painting and video as media.


   Wah Nu's main theme for this exhibition, held in connection with her participation in the 3rd Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale this autumn, is her recent concern about 'identity', which is materialized in a series of acrylic paintings of leaves, each with different colors, shapes and symbolic meanings. Leaves that appear in her paintings range from those of sacred Bo tree and Lotus that are familiar in Buddhist countries to those of Swe Taw (Bauhinia acuminata) which symbolizes 'love' in Myanmar and lovers give a signle leaf of it to each other as a token of love. All these images of leaves, depicted in a simple cartoon-like manner, seem to reflect Wah Nu's sensitive gaze toward things that happen in everydaily life.


   During this exhibition, we also plan to give a screening of video works by Wah Nu and a presentation on Myanmar art scene by the artist's partner, Tun Win Aung. Aung also works in an experimental area such as performance.
